I have a guaranteed 100% original German WW2 M40 steel helmet. A small amount of the original green paint shows under the period rough texture paint. Comes with bread bag strap used to hold foliage camoflage. Liner is all t and shows normal sweat stain wear. No tears but the drawstring is broken. Comes with chinstrap that shows quite a bit of wear but is not broken. The name inside is handpainted Gren. W. Bourgeols FPN 4376E. About 95% of the original green paint still remains on the inside. The helmet is not stamped with size but it measure 22 inches on the inside. As you can see from the very last photo of the inside t is a wire that runs from the helmet band throught the chinstrap hook/loop. I do not see any purpose for it but the soldier that wore the helmet did. I would not try to remove it. It adds character. I have a very fair Reserve for this authentic piece of WW2 history. The only letters that I can see on the underside of the rim is Q64. This one was issued without decals. The M1940 helmet first appeared in March 1940 following a redesign of the manufacturing process which now incorporated more automated stamping techniques. The first helmets issued received only one decal on the left side of the helmet. In 1943 this factory applied decal was discontinued in order to comply with orders issued by the Supreme Commander of the Wehrmacht. Helmets of this type were characteristic of having rolled edges and stamped air vents that were embossed directly into the steel shell. Paint configurations ranged from medium to very dark (almost black-green in color) with various degrees of texture. Some helmets also exhibited a "slate grey" color that was either field or factory applied. The interior of the helmet remained smooth painted unless it was factory or field modified and then re-issued. Many M1940 helmets appear heavier in weight when compared to M1935 or M1942 helmets. This is specifically true of helmets that were manufactured by the Quist firm . These helmet shells are generally well formed and heavy compared to other German helmets of the era. Most M1940 helmets received the second pattern zinc liner band system. However, those introduced in 1940 and early 1941 often have the first model aluminum liner bands. These are appropriately date marked between 1940 and 1943. Attention EBay: T are no offensive symbols on this helmet. No decals or symbols on it whatsoever. Thanks to another great EBay member I took a closer look at the helmet liner and not only is the shell stamped Q64, but The liner does have a round stamp on it and it does say L63 over the number 56. The stamp looks like it says SCHUBER??? BRAUS??. I can't make out the rest of it. Any ideas? Thanks for all of the help. I have added a photo of the right side of the helmet to go along with the left side photo to show you a closeup of the vent hole and rivets. This information came from a fellow Ebayer. I hope this helps. 's the info: The helmet you have was at Normandy in 1944. The Feldpostnummer (PO number) in the back of the helmet is 43676. This number was assigned to the Headquarters and 9 - 12 Companies (III. Battalion) of Grenadier Regiment 739. This unit was a fortifications unit that was based in Cherbourg at the time of the D-Day invasion.
