Here is a nice photo of the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry at the dedication of their monument at Gettysburg on June 13th, 1888. This was the 25th anniversary of the battle. Many regiments returned to Gettysburg on this anniversary to dedicate their new monuments. The 23rds monument stands on Culps Hill on the left side of the road as you walk up. The 23rd arrived at Gettysburg on the afternoon of July 2nd and immediately went to the aid of the 5th Corps near Little Round Top. On the morning of the 3rd, they were sent to Culps Hill to support the 12th Corps. That very afternoon they were sent back to the center to support the 2nd Corps during Picketts Charge. They spent the night of the 3rd near the center of the Union line on cemetary ridge. During the 4th, they engaged in skirmishing, taking care of the wounded and burying the dead. It appears they were all over the battlefield. At Gettysburg the Regiment lost 2 Officers and 29 men. The photo measures about 10 1/2 inches by 15 inches, and shows at least 65 veterans and 6 or 7 women. They all stand at the front of their monument. The color bearers are holding their furled flags at the center and 2 men each hold a 6th Corps guidon flag at both sides. Many veterans are wearing their reunion ribbons and other ribbons or medals on their coats. Several of them are holding walking sticks cut from the battlefield. The image itself is in very nice condition, slightly faded and is, I believe, in the original frame and glass. At the bottom of the photo is an insert which reads -Tipton's Gettysburg Groups-photo by W.H. Tipton-the battlefield photographer. A nice Gettysburg collectable.
