These giant silvery Philippine Clam Shells average from about 9" to 10" across and about 5" wide. These are all natural, but the rough, outer shell has been etched and polished away to expose the rich, iridescent mother-of-pearl (MOP) interior. MOP is a most unique substance produced by the mollusk animal to build their shells. It's composed of proteins and calcium carbonate in a very strong crystal structure which diffracts light, producing the shimmering iridesence. These make great decor items and also quite functional as serving dishes. These are half shells, not pairs. Several ounces of pure MOP. Could be a good source of pearl for jewelry and other crafts projects. Another unusual item recently found. We've admired these great big polished clam shells at our importers for some time, but they would have had to sell for about $25.
