Lowers are much rarer than uppers, in fact, Dr. Hubble once told me that for every 20 uppers, you might get one lower, and needless to say, of all the lowers, lower principals are the rarest and most sought after (and nicest looking). And, lowers are also generally smaller than uppers, it is almost impossible to get a lower principal in good condition at or over 5". Well, enter this beast of a Meg tooth. This lower principal is a bit over 5.5", by a very wide 3 7/8" wide. The root is absolutely monstrously large, solid and perfectly formed, and, it's close to 2" thick! See, I told you this tooth was a beast. :) It also weighs more than most 6.5" Megs, at an astounding .82 lbs.! A 5.5" lower principal, with a near 2" thick root, that weighs nearly a pound, well, I think that more than qualifies this as one of the most massive and impressive lower principals out t, but, it does get even better, much better in fact, because this is one of those very rare teeth which has both rare, world-class size and extremely high quality, 2 things you almost never get to have on the same tooth. The serrations are as sharp as serrations get, (like cut yourself if not careful, sharp), with just a few very light nicks to a few tips, I'd call them easily 99%, as well, the tip is intact and quite sharp with no real damage. To find a giant lower like this, even with dull, worn serrations and a broken tip would be hard, to find one in gem, razor sharp condition, with a good tip is almost unheard of, and yes, it does get better still. When is the last time you saw a giant Meg with a true, world-class bourlette ? Well, you pretty much never do see a giant tooth with a killer bourlette, the bourlette is always the first casualty to fossilization and time, especially on larger teeth, well, the pictures should tell you, and I'll confirm, this giant lower has one of the finest, densest , and widest bourlettes you'll ever see , on any tooth, let alone a super rare tooth like this one. So thick, dense and black, it's like thick black paint, but it's all real of course, and so wide, it gives this already fantastic tooth an incredibly dramatic presence, and a gemminess and completeness you likely won't find on any other giant lower, I mean, just look at it. :) I think it's even denser and thicker in person. And, yes, t are several bright, golden nuggets of pyrite in and around the bourlette and root! I personally am a huge fan of pyrite on teeth, it always adds a very nice extra dimension to a tooth, and it just plain looks cool. Very neat to have a golden metallic mineral growing on a fossil tooth. The pyrite just adds even more interest, rarity and beauty to this already remarkable, true world class tooth. Finally, I want to point out and really emphasize the root on this tooth, I took a few angled shots to give you an idea, but the root aside from being absolutely gigantic, thick and massive, is just so beautifully formed, with the finest possible articulation and a huge arch.
