If you have any questions about the item, or even fossils or minerals in general, please don't hesitate to email us at: Ari@ This tooth has absolutely no repair or restoration, in fact, we do not buy or sell repaired or restored teeth. ______________________________________ ______________________________________ Without doubt, this is one of, if not the rarest overall fossil shark tooth on Ebay currently. As most of you know, Chubs almost never reach 4", because they are very early Megs, or arguably, very late Angustidens, and as such, 4" is huge for an early Miocene shark. Much like 6" is the magic number for Megs, 4" is the number for Chubs, and once you hit 4", every 16th of an inch over 4" increases the rarity almost exponentially, and to find a 5" Chub, well, it would be similar to a near 7" Meg. So, enter this amazing NC Chub! An almost unbelievable 5 1/8" by 4.25" wide! It's a "Red" site NC tooth, that I absolutely believe to be a giant, very early Miocene Chub, and 's why. First, the area w most of these red site teeth are found is one in which many or even most of the teeth are early Miocene transitionals, ie. Chubs. Generally, the way you determine whether a particular tooth is lets say a Ric vs. an Angy, or a Meg vs. a Chub is not so much by how developed the cusps are, but the place it was found and what that area has been dated at, t have been many Angustidens for example found in Oligocene deposits that had very weak, or even non-existant cusps, and yet, they are classified as Angustidens by virtue of which layers/areas they were found in. Chubs by definition have weak cusps, though you do see many borderline Chubs/Megs w the cusps are all but gone, and yet, they are still arguably Chubs because they are found in areas w the teeth are dated to a time inbetween Angustidens and Megalodon. One of the characteristics of Chubs vs Megs aside from the cusps, are the serrations, ever notice that Chubs tend to have much larger and sharper serrations than the later Megs do? So, when you see red site teeth with weak cusps, or even no cusps, but very large serrations, arguably they are Chubs/early Miocene transitionals. But, no need to split hairs on this giant Chub, since as you can clearly see, this huge tooth has weak, but prominent and easily seen cusps. Yes they are weak, but, isn't that after all the definition of a Chub, if the cusps weren't weak, it would more likely be an Angustidens. :) So, semantics aside, this is a very early Miocene shark tooth, call it a Chub, call it an early Meg, call it a late Angustidens, up to you, but I'll call it a Chub since that seems to be what most people call these transitional teeth. So, you have a Chub that is, again, an almost hard to fathom, 5 1/8" by an equally amazing 4.25" wide. And, yes, this is an early Miocene Chub. A truly giant one, that also just happens to have... ...Great color! Very few of these red site teeth are actually red, some are red, most are blackish with some reddish brown mixed in, which is why the site is called a "red" site even though few of the teeth are the best actual cherry red color. This tooth is a "red site" tooth, but it has color that is quite different from the norm, and as you can see I hope, the color is just amazingly beautiful and the enamel very glossy and rich. It's sort of a light tan, almost yellow enamel, with darker, reddish brown spots, and a hint of orange overall. Very hard color to describe, and as I said, it's very attractive and rare color, also, as you can clearly see, t is some unusual and very cool reddish brown spotting all over the tooth, which I personally love, this giant Chub is really totally unique.
