You are bidding on one interesting J Gibson wood sash molding or moulding plane as pictured. It is marked "J GIBSON ALBANY" and owner "DR" (nice bordered stamp) on the front end, and I don't see any markings on the back end.Overall length is about 9-1/2".It features the unusual sash profile, and the diamond shaped escutcheons on the side. Other than the center groove, the profile could almost be that of a mother plane used to make other sash planes. The left iron cuts the groove formed by the left side boxing plus the quarter round shape next to it, and the right iron cuts the groove formed by the right side boxing.John Gibson was born in Ireland and made planes in Albany, NY, off and on under his own name from 1823 to 1852. He was also partners for a while with his brother Joseph Gibson and separately with Simeon Rowell. Please see the book American Wooden Planes 4th Edition for more information about Gibson and his partners. The "DR" mark on the front end was probably an owner, but like some other makers, could it have been the initials of the apprentice who made the plane? Perhaps a relative of Simeon Rowell? Simeon's son was named Charles, so that doesn't fit. Especially if this plane was a mother plane? Just some speculation without any proof, but it is fun to ponder the possibilities.Condition is good, with a variety of stains read more
