James Bond Action Figure Starting in 1964, the A.C. Gilbert Co. began manufacturing a doll devoted to the world's most famous secret agent, James Bond. The character had debuted in the 1962 film Dr. No and was a smashing success with audiences; new movies were coming out at the rate of about one a year and young fans were clamoring for toys devoted to the character.
The Gilbert James Bond action figure stood 12" in height. Although not very maneuverable, the figure sported a spring-activated right hand that 'fired' a small plastic gun. The original figures came attired in a dark blue or black suit and tie.
In 1966-67, the Ideal Toy Company began manufacturing the figures (although the packaging still bore the Gilbert logo). The Ideal Bonds, however, were dressed in swim trunks and white T-shirt, and outfitted with diving gear (probably as a response to 1965's Thunderball).
