This Gilbert Rohde designed radio cabinet and rest-on shelf is from his East Indian Laurel Collection of 1934 for the Herman Miller Furniture Company of Zeeland, Michigan. The radio carcass and speaker have been removed at some point in the past. The speaker cloth has been replaced with a piece of fabric, reproduction speaker cloths are available online, it should be replaced, but the brushed aluminum trim ring remains in place. The radio cabinet was designed by Rohde to coordinate with the other pieces he designed for Herman Miller in 1934, since he felt that the radios on the market at the time were unattractive. The East Indian Laurel collection had cabinets in two different heights, the rest-on shelf was designed so that the shorter pieces could be used in a wall grouping, and everything would have the appearance of being built-in. The support for the rest-on shelf is brushed chrome. The rest-on shelf alone is a rare and desirable piece! The piece is in very good condition. It appears to have been refinished at some point, but it wasn't the best quality refinishing job, if I were to keep it, I would have it redone. But I'm pretty particular, it really does present well as it is. Dimensions are: 24 inches wide 15 inches deep 41 inches high, with rest-on shelf; 30 inches high without shelf I've been collecting Gilbert Rohde pieces for years, unfortunately I couldn't fit this one into the house! So off it goes... Shipping is up to the buyer. This piece can also be picked up at my home in Los Angeles. This piece would work in any Hollywood Regency, Robsjohn-Gibbings, Frankl, Deskey, Art Deco, Streamline Modern, Dunbar, Widdicomb, Eames, Paul Laszlo, Billy Haines, McCobb, 1930's, 1940's, 1950's decor!
