Gilt bronze mythology clock LEDA WITH THE SWAN c1800 This clock with a well known mythological representation is made in France around 1800 by Jean André Beltz who had his studio that time in Paris, Rue St. Denis. Leda and the Swan is a motif from Greek mythology. Leda was loved by Zeus, who seduced her in the guise of a swan. As a swan, Zeus fell into her arms for protection from a pursuing eagle. Gilt bronze case with on top Leda and the Swan, the dial flanked with two fine reliefs with Venus, Leda, a bull, a drinking eagle and more, lower a relief with a face and two winged cherub. The sides with palmettes and eagles within wreathes. White porcelain enamel dial with Roman numerals and steel hands. Signature : “Beltz à Paris” (little damage at right keyhole). Early French clockwork with pendulum on silk suspension, about 8 days going work and striking the 1/1 hours and ½ hours on a silvered bell. Good running and striking condition. Wind-up key included. Measurements : at base 17” x 5”, high 19.5", dial diam. 4.75" incl. the rim. Overall in fine condition, a more rare clock. Winning bidder pays US$ 122 for shipping by insured priority airmail.
