Up for auction is a lacquer-and-gilt-on-wood depiction of a standing Amida Buddha encased in a lacquered-wood zushi, late-Edo Period ca. 1800.
The Amida Buddha figure shows wood loss to the tips of the fingers of the upraised right hand and to the lowerered left hand, in addition to a few minor points of loss to the gilt and lacquer. The zushi exterior shows small points of old wood loss to the front edges of the roof and floor, and the lower portion of the rear section has been relacquered. The interior gilt shows desirable patination. The original gilt-copper hinges are intact and fully functional.
