Up for auction is a gilt-and-lacquer-on-wood depiction of a Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu, late-Edo Period ca. 1850.
Description to follow momentarily. Thank you for your kind patience. Dimensions: Overall height, including the lotus-form dais upon which the figure is seated: 17.3 cm (6.8 in) Height of figure only: 14.9 cm (5.9 in) Diameter of upper surface of lotus-form dais: 13.1 cm (5.2 in) Shipping information: EMS airmail shipping and insurance for this piece will be US$20 for Europe and US$16 for North America and Oceania. Thank you for viewing this listing. Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu is the only deity in the Buddhist pantheon depicted in the seated pose of royal ease and, as such, arguably possesses a distinct allure. This piece is a fine case in point. With the exception of two missing hand-held attributes, the figure is fully intact, albeit completely regilded at some point in the fairly distant past, apparently. The mandorla and the decorative metalwork originally around and about the head and neck are missing, as well. The figure and the lotus-form dais, although sculpted separately, appear to be an original ensemble. A lovely piece.
