Up for auction is a gilt-and-lacquer-on-wood depiction of a standing Amida Nyorai, the hands forming the raigo mudra symbolizing Amida's descent on earth to gather up the souls of the faithful departed. Mid- to late-Edo Period ca. 1800.
A deftly sculpted, elegantly finished Amida Buddha, beautifully patinated, showing loss to the nose and to the tips of the index finger and thumb of the lowered left hand as well as a backward bend and slight break to the three extended fingers of the upraised right hand. Otherwise, fine. A noteworthy little piece, with real age. Dimensions: Overall height, including plinth and mandorla: 28.2 cm (11.1 in) Height of Amida Buddha figure only: 14.5 cm (5.7 in) Width of hexagonal plinth: 7.8 cm (3.1 in) Depth of plinth: 5.7 cm (2.2 in) Shipping information: EMS airmail shipping and insurance for this piece will be US$24 for Europe and US$20 for North America and Oceania.
