An historic engraving by the celebrated printmaker Giorgio Ghisi (1520-1582) of "The Nativity" or "The Shepherds Adoring the Infant Jesus", after the painting by Agnolo Bronzino (1503-1572). The piece was published in 1553. This engraving was one of the 5 large engravings Ghisi had completed for Hieronymus Cock's publishing house. The original painting was completed for a wealthy Floretine patron, Filippo d'Averardo. This piece is a later state. We know this because the first state of the image had no writing in the wreaths that are located at the top of the image which the angels are holding up. While in our edition, as you are able to see from the photos, the wreaths contain verses praising Our Lady. This piece is certainly one of the largest engravings created during thr Renaissance. The piece is attached to an addtional sheet and has some issues, including tears and small missing sections in the right and top of the image itself, which we have documented in our photos. Thus, we would say the engraving is in fair to good condition. The measurements of the image and the frame are as follows: 26 (H) x 19.5 (W) inches. Please raise any questions you desire. All the best! And, if you have the time, take a look at the other fascinating pieces we are offering: a lot of great it ems from a variety of estates.
