COOL THINGS ABOUT URANUS- THE "PLANET OF REBELLION" Uranus was the first planet discovered in modern times (on March 13, 1781 by William Herschel) It is tfore named for the ancient Greek deity of the heavens-- the earliest supreme god and progenitor of all other gods, mate of Gaia (Mother Earth) and father to the Titans and the Cyclopes Uranus has 13 rings and 27 moons. 21 of these moons are named and, unlike other bodies in the solar system whose names come from mythology, they take their names from the writings of Shakespeare and Pope (Opelia, Desdemona, Juliet and Stephano, to name a few) Uranus is the only planet in the solar system that is "tipped on its side"-- a position that is thought to be the result of a collision with a planet-sized body early in the solar system's history Uranus is typically thought by astrologers to be the ruling planet of Aquarius, and its strange traits (rotating on its side, the density and unique composition of its atmosp, etc) give it astrological significance as the breaker of convention Modern interpretation associates Uranus with the principles of genius, new and unconventional ideas, discovery, electricity, inventions and the beginning of the industrial revolution Its discovery coincided with the prevalence of democracy and human rights in politics (the breakaway of the American colonies and the French Revolution) and with the Romantic movement in art and literature, which emphasized individuality and freedom of expression
