Illegal Glenn Hotel 928 Monmouth St., Newport, Kentucky Fancy "KD", Blue, Hub Mold "KD" are the initials of L. Kaufman and Harry D. Duckham, Managers 3200 Chips Mfg 4/15/37 Another of the Peter Schmidt operations, the Glenn hotel was bought in 1932 and a small casino with slot machines was set up. The joint became a haven for organized running fron indictments and/or arrests. Besides gambling, the Glenn Hotel had prostitution. In 1941, after being run out of his Beverly Hills operation, Schmidt opened a larger gambling club on the 2nd floor and named it the Glenn Rendezvous. As with other clubs in the Northern Kentucky area, its gambling was in the open, with appropriate payments made to local law enforcement and government officials to avoid prosecution of gambling laws, and provided valuable jobs and business from conventioneers and othervisitors to the Cincinnati, Ohio area, located directly across the Ohio river. Raids were a common affair among these clubs, but were almost always for the benefit of local 'reformer' groups, or to send a message to clubs slow in paying graft. The illegal joints were often back in full operation soon after the raid; often the next day. Often, operators were notified in advance of raids, and no gambling was found on the premises. Gambling often resumed within a few hours of the 'Raid'. All read more
