The New England Glass Company was in business from 1818 to 1888 and was located in the Cambridge area of Boston. This lamp has a patent date of 1854. This unusual kerosene lamp is in "as found" condition and no attempt has been made to clean or refurbish the finish. The lamp stands 13 inches to the top of the insulated bail and is approximately 8 inches wide at the widest point, the glass globe is about 5 3/4 inches wide and the diameter of the base is 6 inches. The kerosene tank unsnaps from the lamp for filling. The stamped inscription on the base reads: "N. E. Glass Co." "Patented Oct.24, 1854". The smoke bell is topped with a brass finial and the glass guard appears to be brass also. The upper half of the glass has a smoke/oil film which I have not attempted to clean off. The upper part of the metal base is pierced with stars and the side of the smoke bell also has a pierced decoration.
