Photograph of first British post-war fighter flight refuelled: the Gloster Javelin 1955 This is a photograph of the Gloster Javelin being refuelled in flight by an English Electric Canberra Mk. B-1 bomber equipped as an experimental tanker. On the back is a foolscap sheet on which is described the aircraft and the trials being undertaken on refuelling while airborne by Flight Refuelling Ltd using the Probe and Drogue equipment. It also states that the first pilot who flew such a trail was Mr Pat Hornidge, who set up a world record when he stayed aloft for more than 12 hours during early trials with Probe and Drogue equipment. Later it was flown by Wing Commander R.F. Martin, DFC, AFC, Gloster’s chief test pilot. The sheet was issued on behalf of Flight Refuelling Ltd, Tarrant Rushton, Blandford, Dorset and is dated October 20th 1955. The photograph measures 8” x 10”. It has pin holes in the corners and shows signs of handling. It is probably faded and is slightly curled, especially at the bottom. Please see other aircraft photos on this site at present.
