Gloucester MA Samuel E. Sawyer Oliver Lane David Low Oriental Rug Review/Asian Trade is pleased to offer a small group of items, c. 1860s-80s, having to do the North Shore town of Gloucester in Massachusetts, its major 19th century personality Samuel E. Sawyer, The Lane family and the Low Family. Sawyer was a merchant and ship owner whose ships were a major component in the China Trade. He lived on his "Brookbank" estate in Gloucester, but maintained offices in Boston and New York City from which he managed his ships and captains. One of those captains, a "Master Mariner," was Oliver G. Lane who is thought to be related to the great marine artist Fitzhugh Lane, perhaps a nephew. Sawyer was a major patron of Lane and most of his paintings that hang in public places in Gloucester were donated by Sawyer. David W. Low was a town Clerk of Gloucester and a hero of the Civil War, having served with the "Minutemen of 61," a unit formed after the fall of Fort Sumter of men and boys from Gloucester. These documents come from a huge archive we acquired nearly forty years ago at an auction in Newburyport, MA. This offering consists of:
(1.) An organizing circular for the "Cape Ann Historical Society", c. 1873, listing David W. Low as Vice President. Low persuaded Samuel Sawyer to be a financial backer of the Society. (2.) A Power of Attorney executed by Oliver G. Lane, in Gloucester, May 8, 1860. (3.) Receipt signed by David W. Low in his capacity as Town Clerk of Gloucester acknowledging a payment from Oliver G. Lane, 1868 (4.) Agreement Between Samuel E. Sawyer and Marine Attorney Samuel Stevens in which Stevens is to act on Sawyer's behalf during the "Alabama Claims" litigation, 1882. (5.) Postal cover on which Sawyer's secretary wrote, "Copy of letter to SamL Stevens giving him painting by F. H. Lane of Castine Bay." Follow This Link to Old Paper, NH, Salem, MA.
