The culture of the region has deep, Celtic roots which may account for the artistic inclination prevalent among its native population. For more than three hundred years, artisans of Gmunden have fashioned tableware and other household objects from the alluvial clay deposits found t, and have decorated them in colors and patterns that have become classics of the genre. During the last century, the individual artisans of Gmunden turned to more organized forms of manufacturing to produce the regions distinctive ceramic ware.
