The grand binding was made at the beginning of the 17 th century and give this edition a distinctive look. The covers show a beautiful oval ornament at the center with a complex system of frames and further ornaments stretching around it. One of the frames also contains small portraits of famous Roman emperors and writers. The title page of both volumes was printed in black and red ink and was adorned with a large engraved title vignette measuring 5 x 3.7 inches. The image shows a luxurious crown decorated with various gems as well as two roses. The last leaf of volume III also contains a beautiful figurative woodcut vignette of similar size.Furthermore the text contains numerous small woodcut initials of different designs. Some initials are surrounded by an ornamental frame while others are submerged within an ornamental structure. The Infortiatum and Digestum novum are two of the famous three digests of Roman Law. They are a collection of chosen works by Roman lawyers which together make up the most important part of the Roman Law. Most of the works within the digest deal with the private and criminal law of the Corpus Iuris Civilis. The digests were first introduced in 533 AD by Justinian I. and initially only valid for the eastern Roman Empire. After the recapture of the western regions it was instituted in the whole Empire. The source for most early modern post-roman digests is the handwritten Codex Florentinus (formerly known as the Codex Pisanus ), a 6th century Byzantine copy of the pandects of Emperor Justinian I. The digest edition at hand can be traced back to Denis Godefroy (1549-1622), a famous French scholar and advisor to Henry IV of France and Frederick IV, Elector Palatine. Denis Godefroy also published the first modern edition of the Corpus Juris Civilis in 1583, which quickly gained popularity amongst scholars of law and was soon considered a standard work of reference.Overall, these two wonderfully decorated volumes represent a valuable early print of the Denis Godefroy edition. With its elaborately made elegant bindings and its importance for modern law, it is both precious by content and beauty.Shipping: In addition to the auction price we charge 10 e postage and packing within Germany, 25 e wit...
