· CONDITION Excellent · ISSUED 1980 1 ST ISSUE WITH HUMMELWERK BROWN VELVET BOX · SIZE 1 inch tall · MAKER GOEBEL OLSZEWSKI · BOX YES ORIGINAL 1st HUMMELWERK BOX · AVAILABILITY EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO FIND This is a very rare Robert Olszewski miniature called “Daylight Encounter”. Featuring an Owl on a stump being harassed by a pair of mocking birds. Caught in a rare daytime environment, this owl may have met his match. Normally a nocturnal bird, he has been sighted by two mockingbirds that are not happy to see this predator in their territory. According to Dick Hunt’s book on Olszewski miniatures it is one of only 350 made for a special Miniatures trade show in Chicago in 1980. It comes in its original 1980 Hummelwerk box that has the ivory background, which was only used for the first 1000 of all Goebel Olszewski miniatures, produced. In addition, although most of the bottom label is missing (very common in older pieces) the bottom is white. This confirms that mini sculpture pre-dates 1982 and along with the 1980 version of brown velvet presentation box adds up to a very rare Olszewski miniature. Entirely handpainted by Olszewski’s skilled artisans, it’s the details that make this masterpiece in miniature so desirable. Just look at the miniscule elements that make this sculpture so incredible. From the tiny red flowers and oak leaves at the base of tree trunk, to the graceful birds in flight and startled intruder, no detail has been overlooked. You can even see the look of fear in the owl’s eyes as he fends off the attack. I have gone over this piece very carefully with a magnifying glass and can find NO CHIPS, SCRATCHES OR NICKS WHATSOEVER. It is in exceptional condition considering it age and rarity.
