The wonderful story of Lionel Trains began on September 5, 1900. On that day, Joshua Lionel Cowen and a colleague established the Lionel Manufacturing Company, which was going to engage in "the manufacture of electrical novelties." One of the company's first products was a flatbed trailer and track that Cowen sold to a local retailer as an animated display for products in his store window. The next day, the retailer returned for another display--his first customer had purchased the display instead of the products. Cowen began offering his "Electric Express" to consumers, and electric toy trains have made Lionel the favorite of hobbyists and collectors ever since. Selected by Lionel as the centerpiece of it Centennial celebration, the first Hudson 700E was introduced in 1937. A marvel of its time, the 700E was a highly detailed die-cast replica in perfect O scale. The New York Central's J-Class 4-6-4 Hudson, with its classic steam locomotive styling, was an ideal choice for the landnark Lionel model, It is said to have been the favorite of Lionel founder Joshua Cowen. It was certainly the pride of the NYC fleet, pulling both passenger cars and freight along its namesake river. This dated, commemorative Keepsake Ornament is formed of die-cast metal. The combination of finishes, including the 22 Kt Gold Flash, echo the markings of the 700E J-1E Hudson Steam Locomotive being issued by Lionel in an elaborate Centennial set.
