Gold Anchor Marked Chelsea Teapot c1760-70
J & J House Antiques Gold anchor marked Chelsea porcelain teapot & cover, 5 1/2"h, c.1760-1770. Ovoid Chinese shape with overhang domed cover. Figural reserves in color enamels of Elizabethan man & woman in court costume. Alternate quadrants in dark underglaze blue. Gilt borders. Solid gilt painted spout & handle. Cover similarly divided with landscape painted reserves. Applied flower bud finial & serrated green leaves. The deep blue shows the bleeding at the edge characteristic of the gold anchor period which is typically, as , covered by gilt borders elaborate enough to do the job. The porcelain body of this period has bone ash added to the formula & is tfore closer to bone china than softer bodies of the raised anchor period (c.1749-1752) & the red anchor period (c.1752-1756). Still the body shows tiny pinholes & small moons when held to the light. These are caused by air holes in the body & disappear with improved potting techniques by around 1780. Flower bud finial with small chip to one petal edge (see photo). A beautiful piece in clean excellent condition.
