This is a handmade silver Bedouin bracelet, lightly covered in gold, that I purchased in Taif, Saudi Arabia in the late 1970s. I bought it at a Bedouin market, similar to our swap meets, that the Bedouins held on their weekends. They would bring their jewelry, carpets and brass items to sell. This bracelet is very ornate and has a small red stone of some sort at the clasp. The interior measures 2" in diameter when closed, and the outside measures about 3". The band measures about 3/4" wide, except for the clasp area and that measures 1 1/4". The clasp is a screw clasp that opens by unscrewing the screw clockwise (the opposite direction then we westerners usually do). I do not know the quality of silver used, as none of the Bedouin jewelry was ever marked, since it was made for the family women. I do not know how the gold was applied, or whether it is gold plate or leaf, or what quality gold it is. I do not know the age of this piece, but it is at least 30 years old as that is when I bought it. When Bedouin women died, none of their jewelry could be handed down to family members, and either had to be melted down or sold outside the family. So, the only older pieces still in existence were ones sold to non-Bedouins or foreigners. The bracelet weighs 55.3 grams. Other than some slight discoloration in spots, it is in excellent condition, read more
