Up for auction is an old Gold Rush soda from San Francisco that dates from 1852-1854 (Markota, 1972). Babb & Co was located at 280 Dupont Street, which is now called Grant Street (the Grant Street that goes through Chinatown). This bottle is listed by the authors as scarce. I bought it from a respected local dealer who use to dig these bottles himself in San Francisco during the 1970s. I was really lucky to become aquainted with him.This bottle was dug in San Francisco during the 1970s in a construction site, downtown. Why am I selling it? I have 3 of these bottles and limited space.The bottle is in uncleaned, dug condition with some ground marks and etching from acidic soil. There are some areas of what collectors call "sickness (rainbow colored discoloration on the glass from organic acids, etc.). In other words, it's been burried for over 150 years! There is some tiny pinhead roughness of the lip in one area, but the bottle is otherwise intact.The bottle leans to the left a bit, has a nice enlongated and twisted bubble in the neck, and stretch marks in the same neck area. Just a great raw example of a San Francisco Gold Rush artifact that survived the San Francisco 1906 earthquake by being deep underground. If this bottle could talk.
