Goldsmith, Oliver. A HISTORY OF THE EARTH AND ANIMATED NATURE. With an Introductory View of the Animal Kingdom, Translated from the French of Baron Cuvier, and copious notes embracing accounts of New Discoveries in Natural History: A LIFE OF THE AUTHOR, by Washington Irving; and a carefully prepared Index to the whole work. Published by A. Fullarton and Co., London, Edinburgh, and Dublin, 1850 and 1852. 2 Vols. large 8vo. (10x6.5 inches). The two volumes are complete and are bound with the 72 hand-coloured plates, as called for. In addition there are over 30 additional hand coloured plates, tipped-in, from earlier publications (dated 1815; 1816 and 1818) - these are sometimes of smaller format, and reduced, and are inserted (tipped in) in their proper place in text throughout the two volumes - no harm being caused to the text or binding. The 72 bound-in plates have useful marginal typed captions at the foot of each plate. These two early Fullarton publications were therefore probably used as working copies at some time after publication. Bound in contemporary full calf with gilt decoration and lettering - each volume with a little wear and rubbing to head of spine, otherwise complete, clean and tightly bound.
