Up for bid is a Goodell - Pratt No. 102 Reciprocating Hand/Push Drill with 5 Bits and a Centering Punch . The drill was made near the turn of the century as indicated by the patent year of 1895 . Goodell Bros. was founded in 1888 by brothers Albert D. Goodell and Henry E. Goodell who were employees of the Millers Falls Co. In 1892 Albert left the company to establish Goodell Tool Co. with his son. Another brother, Dexter W. Goodell, joined the Goodell Bros. firm, and the company relocated to Greenfield, Ma. Dexter left in 1895, and in 1898 Henry sold the firm to the treasurer and manager, William M. Pratt . The following year Pratt renamed the business to Goodell-Pratt Co. In 1931, Goodell-Pratt merged with Millers Falls Co which discontinued the Goodell line since it already had many of its own hand drills in production. The drill is in excellent condition with very little wear for a nearly 100 year old tool. It measures 13 1/4 inches long and has a 3-jaw chuck . It has been wipe-cleaned only to reveal most (99%) of the handle nickel plating intact. The action is very smooth and the handle has only minor toolbox scraping. The chuck has no wear on the grip and operates with ease. The are 5 bits included with this drill as well as a short stub of metal with a point centerd on the flat side which leads me to think it is some sort of centering marker or bit. The chuck is stamped: "Goodell-Pratt Company Greenfield, Mass. U.S.A. Pat. Aug. 13, 1895" T is a small spring that was in one of the handles bit storage chambers which are numbered from 0-9. T is writing stamped above those numbers which reads "Goodell Pratt Company Greenfield, Mass. U.S.A. --".
