A quart size (about 7 1/4" tall with lid) ATLAS fruit jar in an extremely DEEP PURPLE / sun colored AMETHYST color with nice crude wavy whittled glass. This is not a reproduction, it is close to 100 years old. Jar Embossed : " "ATLAS / E-Z / SEAL" ". Base Embossed : " "ATLAS" / E-Z SEAL / TRADE MARK REG. ". Condition : Jar in excellent condition with only very light wear. Has shallow lip flakes. NO cracks, chips, dings; overall beautiful! Glass lid is in perfect condition but is a light amber brown color/not purple. Age : An early ABM smooth lip jar, ca. 1910. This jar is not a reproduction but an antique jar with nice wavy whittled glass. An absolutely choice window bottle, glass lid and wire bail included, check it out ! About this DEEP PURPLE COLOR ... This jar has been deeply purpled by an intense light or heat source. In my opinion it is NOT an altered jar as this purple color would naturally occur over many years exposure to the sun. (Some may disagree that this color would occur naturally, BUT, I have had bottles turn this color by leaving them on top of a roof with full sun exposure.) Only jars with manganese in them (pre-1914) will turn purple like this. The natural color of glass back in the 1800's was aqua, but aqua glass was not desirable for canning food products in. So it was discovered that by adding pulverized manganese (a mineral) to the hot glass, it would turn the glass clear. But, years later, once the glass had been blown into a jar, the manganese would oxidize when it was exposed to the ultra violet rays of the sun, and turn a nice purple hue. In 1914 with the start of WWI the U.S. could no longer get manganese, so it was no longer used. The bottom line: Generally speaking, purple glass dates back from before 1914. Since purple glass is so attractive to look at, many collectors today have found various ways to speed up this process by exposing clear antique jars and bottles to different types of lights and heat. But, as mentioned, only the antique glass (pre-1914) with manganese in it will turn purple . The fact that it would turn purple guarantees that this is a VERY OLD authentic antique canning jar.
