BEAUTIFUL BUTTERSCOTCH BAKELITE SALT & PEPPER SHAKER SET in VERY GOOD CONDITION!!!! The base is slightly more than 5" long by 3.5" wide. It was developed by Belgian born chemist Leo Baekeland in New York in 1907. One of the first plastics made from synthetic components, Bakelite was originally used for its electrical nonconductivity and heat-resistant properties in electrical insulators, radio and telephone casings. Bakelite expanded quickly into such diverse products as jewelry, kitchenware and childrens' toys, saxophone mouthpieces, whistles , cameras , electric guitars , telephone s, pistol grips, and appliance casings. After WWII, factories increased production and enabled the uses of Bakelite to extend into other genres, such as jewelry boxes, desk sets, clocks, radios, game pieces, poker chips, billiard balls and Mah Jong sets. The creation of translucent Bakelite in the 1940s gave rise to translucent jewelry and other items. The "retro" appeal of old Bakelite products has made them extremely collectible in recent years.
