I wish I could tell you what these are - but I can't because I don't know what they are. I'm not sure if they're Austrian, French, Bavarian, German or English and I don't know if they are or are Meissen, Royal Dux, Dresden, Rudolstadt, Sitzendorf, Staffordshire, Royal Doulton, Gebruder Heubach - or . . . I don't know what! I know that sounds really silly - but I'm just trying to be honest. These figures are from my husband's grandparent's estate. They were proudly displayed on the hearth of an enormous fireplace in their formal living room. After my husband inherited them, they've stayed in a box in storage because we don't have an enormous anything and have no place for them. They are big - the young man is about 22" tall and 7.5" wide at the base and the young lady is slightly taller - just slightly and about the same at the base. They are incredibly lifelike, exquisitely hand painted and how they are not broken, chipped, etc. is a complete mystery to me. I don't know how these sort of things survive time but they look like they should belong in a museum to me! The fingers are so delicate, the flowers, rosettes and tiny details so incredibly fine that I'm amazed every time I look at them. The young man is holding a bow and arrow, the young lady sports a small flower in her hand. The colors are vivid yet so airy and the gold enamel (I think it's enamel) that highlights both pieces is expertly handled. Each is marked with a stamped black anchor. The young man has the four (vent?) holes and a "T" impressed in the underside of the base; the woman has two (vent?) holes and a "D" impressed in the underside of her base. They each weight about 10 lbs. They're beautiful - I don't think any of us would deny that. The question I'd LOVE to know is who made them? If anyone out t knows or has a hunch, but all means let me know! I have more photos of their detail of the backs of them and can take any photos that you might like - unfortunately ebay only allows for 12 photos and I simply ran out of room. If you'd like to see more, just ask me what portion of the pieces you'd like more photos of. They will be VERY carefully packed. Because of the combined weight, this of course won't be just $7.00 in postage. I will pack them in the next few days in the event someone wants more photographs as I would prefer to handle them as little as possible (I'm afraid of dropping one of them :-)! With regards to shipping, I charge only for actual USPS postage and insurance - nothing more. If you'd like an estimate of the cost to ship to your zip code, please contact me. Payment via Paypal, Money Order or Check is welcomed, but if you send a MO or check please be patient while the bank works its magic. Payment is due within 10 days of the auction's end. Thanks for looking and have a wonderful day! ************* A very kind ebayer wrote me to say that these might indeed be German bisque figures by Ernst Bohne. I quickly looked up the difference between bisque and porcelain and while internet info isn't 100%, it would appear that porcelain is the result of firing bisque so that you get a shiny or glossy finish. These figurines are NOT shiny or glossy - I think that would detract from their lifelike and gentle quality, so I believe based on some quick "research" on the net, that they may indeed be bisque? As to Ernst Bohne, I found examples of his work /shops/marmeesattic/item/009?yc=1 and /848/PictPage/1238745.html . The mark is very similar, but not exactly the same though lots of marks changed over the years. Plus these figures lack the detail our young couple for auction have, though perhaps the two examples I list are earlier or later or are not just terrific examples when compared to our young couple, if in fact our couple is Bohne. Anyone else have any thoughts? ***************** 09/16/07 Another very kind ebayer...
