his late 19th century quilt is a beautifully made, outstanding version of the classic and beloved Robbing Peter to Pay Paul block design. Featuring expert, crisp-hand-piecing in the blocks and gorgeous, dense hand-quilted texture, it is strong, gloriously unfaded and really has no complaints aside from a little contained damage to the backing fabric. SizeThe quilt measures about 80" square . The blocks are just under 7" square and the borders are each about 3 1/2" wide. Quilting The hand-quilting is exquisite, with perfect, tiny stitches numbering 9-12 to the inch, counting on the top side of the quilt only. The blocks are overall quilted in crisp freehand diagonal square gridding, the lines spaced a little under 1" apart. The borders are overall quilted in big beautiful triangular wedges of diagonal lines spaced 1/2" to 3/4" apart. The lines switch orientation from wedge to wedge creating a lovely vaguely woven look. Construction The blocks appear to all be beautifully hand-pieced, and then both set together and the borders added by machine. Binding, Batting & Backing The super narrow self-binding is rolled from the back and hand-stitched tight. A beautifully delicate finishing touch, it creates the tiniest rim along the edge of the quilt, measuring only 1/8" or at most 3/16" wide throughout. Although it does show some light surface toning, I only find a handful of tiny instances of really light surface abrasion and fuzzing along the edge. The batting is thin and completely even with a lovely little bit of loft. The backing is a lovely little soft green and white stripe. It's in great shape aside from some light toning, a 1/2" x 3/4" scorch mark and a series of surface holes that are probably where other scorch marks originally were. Most of these are contained in a small area just 1 1/2" x 7" and you can feel some faint crisp, dry, surface residue from iron-on patches that were previously there. Away from them near an edge, one of the patches did a little more damage, leaving the fabric very stiff, turning it lightly tan from the adhesive residue and leaving a torn hole about 1 1/2" in either direction. Aside from this last instance, these tiny holes are all minor stuff. It might be nice to patch the instance near the edge in a more sensitive style, but even this one doesn't affect the quilt's strength or the front of it in any more serious way than the loss of two short segments of hand-quilting lines. Condition The quilt's condition is just excellent: strong, sturdy, supple and clean. Aside from the contained little instances of damage on the reverse, there really are no complaints with this gorgeous quilt worse than an occasional very subtle fleck of dye-change to the chrome yellow.
