Description: A legendary name among women silversmiths in Mexico, Margot van Voorhies Carr, better known as Margot de Taxco, started specializing in champleve enamelwork in the mid-1950s. The necklace featured in this auction must have been made some time between 1955 and 1978, based on the specific hallmarks that it bears. I think it is probably a 1960s piece and it is a sweet example of its creator's mastery in combining silver and enamels.Measuring a wearable 15 1/4" long and 5/8" wide, this choker is made up of twenty seven individual links attached to each other with cylindrical connectors. Each link consists of a silver platform with a raised Greek key design and it's filled with blue champleve enamel in the most gorgeous blue that you have seen - it reminds me of the color the Mediterranean takes on in Greece when the sun is sky high during the summer months! The choker is fully and appropriately marked on the back of two of the links with the eagly 16 assay mark encircled by "STERLING MADE IN MEXICO", "MARGOT DE TAXCO" and design number "5403" with an impressed "A" underneath it. It is known that Margot was one of several Taxco silversmiths who marked their creations with design numbers and that for her enameled pieces she used 5109 through 5922 (please refer to Morrill and Berk, Mexican Silver, p. 173, 2001 ed.).
