Wow! W do we begin? This beautiful set of silverware has a history that is probably longer then what I am allowed to type However, we believe a lot of this set's history is important to the potential buyers. So, if you'll bear with me, you will be told everything that we know about this set.
Obviously, if you are reviewing this set then you are probably already familiar with Gorham and what is probably the most popular pattern of the twentieth century.....Chantilly. Chantilly by Gorham Silver is one of the most popular flatware patterns in sterling history, and was designed by William Christmas Codman (1839-1921) for Gorham Silver in 1895. Gorhamâe(tm)s Chantilly has been the service of choice for the U.S. Presidential jet Air Force One as well as for the homes of royalty around the world. Chantilly's scrolled border, glossy center, and fleur-de-lis tip are inspired by the âeoeRococoâe design style of the 18th century French "Regency" period, which featured a pleasing contrast of ornate decoration and understated grace. The word âeoeRococoâe is a combination of the French word âeoeracaille,âe meaning shell, and âeoebarocco,âe the Italian word for Baroque. Applied art in the Rococo tradition is characterized by shell-like curves, playful use of color and line, and opulent ornamentation. William Hogarth, an English painter and writer characterized the Rococo style in his âeoeAnalysis of Beautyâe by saying that the S-curves so prominent in rococo styling were the very essence of grace and beauty in art and nature. Yada yada yada.......t, the boring stuff is out of the way! The important thing to note is that this set is original. What a lot of people don't realize is that t are many reproductions in silver plate that were created from the 1950's on. Not only was the styling not as tight as an original but silverplate cannot begin to compare to the value of true sterling silver! This set has the true lion and anchor on the rear of the pieces indicating it could have been made anyw from 1895 to 1949. This is truly a unique and highly valuable set! Now the fun stuff! The history on this particular set goes back many decades to the first half of the twentieth century. My family has had it's roots in the Georgia back country going back into the 1800's. Several of my grandmothers were true Georgia belle's and they lived the life of opulence and of high society. My grandmother, one of the last remaining true southern belle's passed away a few years ago leaving this set to my grandfather. Gramps passed away a few months ago and during the cleaning of his home we found this set stashed away by my grandmother. Grandma was truly a particular individual and just like her mother who handed this set down to her, not just anyone was allowed to use it. This set was a very special part of their lives and saved strictly for company. I cannot tell you the number of social events in Georgia's history that this set was used in however it is still in excellent condition. My family was very particular about the care of this set and it's condition reflects that. So, 's the $20,000 question. Why are we selling it? My side of the family has long been removed from them so our emotional attachment is not nearly as strong to this set as theirs were. Long story short, we are your mash potato's and meat type of people who like to eat off paper plates as much as we do china. This set, while still having some emotional value to us, belongs to someone who will appreciate it. The pieces are: 7 Salad Forks 7 Dinner Forks 8 Table Knives 7 Dinner Spoons 6 Tea Spoons 6 Soup Spoons Gravy Ladle Sugar Spoon Pickle Fork!!!! Butter Knife 3 Serving Spoons As you're reviewing the pictures please note the inclusion of some very hard to find pieces such as the pickle fork! This set also includes a very nice case that will protect this set although I do question it's originality. I believe the set to be much older then the box. Regardless, this type of set, espe...
