FINEST c1863 GORHAM COIN SILVER PORTRAIT MEDALLION CREAM PITCHER AND SUGAR BOWL SET; RICHLY DETAILED RENAISSANCE REVIVAL INSPIRED PORTRAITS; GOLD WASH; IDENTICAL SET ex SAM WAGSTAFF COLLECTION SOLD AT CHRISTIES 1989; 16 OUNCES We are pleased to offer this beautifully designed and meticulously hand crafted, c1863 Gorham coin silver portrait medallion sugar bowl and matching cream jug. Given their limited production and elegant almost regal visual appeal, medallion wares are eagerly sought by collectors. Gorham, Tiffany and several of the smaller American firms offered both flat and hollow portrait silver. This Gorham set displays one of the most creative, highly ornamented designs and superb finish detail of any we have observed in 30 years of collecting. No less a silver collector than Sam Wagstaff agreed. He owned an identical set, which sold January 20, 1989 at Christies, New York City. The set skillfully executed in raised globe form. The cream pitcher with richly detailed Renaissance revival portraits to centre, both sides. Applied against an elegant raised bead on linear ground decorative band. Boldly modelled leaf and curling vine framed high arched spout. Fine "pebbled" texture centre. This spout identical to that found on the Abe Lincoln tea set c1860, illustrated in Carpenter page 46.
