Gorham Rondo Sterling Flatware Service for Six, c1951
History & Context The company that became the Gorham Corporation was founded about 1817 by Jabez Gorham in Providence, Rhode Island, and became the Gorham Manufacturing Company in 1863. Jabez Gorham started making silver in 1831 in a shop on Steeple Street in Porvidence. born to a family of eight, he was apprenticed to New England Silversmith Nehemhiah Dodge. Dodge was one of the founders of the silver and jewelers crafts industry in 18th century New England. After his seven year apprenticeship with Dodge, Jabez formed his own business. He created the "French Filigree" chain as well as a wide selection of hand-crafted pieces. The firm began producing "coin silver" spoons (made from melted coins). Jabez's son John took control of the company when jabez retired, and, by 1875, t were more than 400 employees. In 1890 Gorham moved to a new site in Providence (an office building designed in 1905 by architect Stanford White) which was located on Fith Avenue in New York City. Gorham's familiar trademark was registered December 19, 1899 at which time it was stated that it had been in use since January 1, 1853. The Gorham Company now states that it was used as early as 1848 and that from 1848 to 1865 the lion faced left rather than right. Later pieces (like this set) are marked "Gorham Sterling." To date the production of Hollowware, the company began using year markings in 1868. Letters of the alphabet -- A thru Q -- were used from 1868 thru 1884 at which time the company adopted symbols for each year thru 1933 at which time they were discontinued. In January 1941, year symbols were resumed on sterling hollowware except lower priced itemsGorham, over the past century, acquired several well regarded firms, including Whiting, Durgin, Kerr, Mt Vernon and Alvin.
