Gorham Sovereign (Old) Sterling Silver Flatware 46 Pc 1941-Set For 8-Storage Case-84 Troy Oz Total Weight Prairie Wind Antiques is pleased to be back, offering more great "fresh to the market" estate finds this week. This lovely, vintage sterling silver flatware set in Gorham's "Sovereign" pattern comes to you straight from a fine estate that we recently purchased. You will also receive what I believe to be the original Gorham storage case with it. In 1941, the Gorham Silver Company introduced the beautiful "Sovereign" pattern, designed by James Russell Price. This is a heavy, substantial pattern with a beautiful pineapple motif . The pineapple has been the traditional symbol of welcome and hospitality since the early Colonial days.This pattern is sometimes confused with a later Gorham pattern "Hispania" or "Golden Sovereign" from the 1960's and 1970's, which is very different. This is why you often see the name of this pattern followed by the word "old" in brackets to clearly identify it as the early Sovereign pattern from 1941.In this auction, you are bidding on a service for eight people with serving pieces- a total of 46 pieces. They are marked "Gorham Sterling" and bear the older Gorham hallmarks-the lion (in reference to the English hallmark for Sterling), the anchor (for Rhode Island, the state w Gorham was originally located), and the letter G (for the company name). The weight of the set is 2600 grams, just about 84 troy ounces . Please remember that the blades of the knives are stainless steel; I estimate that the actual weight of the sterling silver in the set is closer to 70 troy ounces after adjusting for the weight of the stainless blades-at today's prices for Sterling silver over $13.00/troy ounce, the silver value alone of the set exceeds $900 . The set is in excellent estate condition . It has been very lightly used and shows only minor signs of wear that you would expect in a vintage set. None of the pieces have ever been monogrammed or chemically polished.
