A SUPERB and extremely unusual large size GORHAM sterling silver ACID ETCHED marine and birdlife scene MATCH SAFE made Circa 1880. The front has a very detailed and very finely acid etched scene of a large turtle swimming towards swirly leaves growing out of the sandy bottom of the sea. W the match safe opens up is a wave design to simulate the top of the ocean, above this a very detailed bird that is flying over the ocean waves. A really nice feature is the way the silversmith has differentiated between the sea and sky using this wave edge pattern that surrounds the opening to the match safe. On the other side is an equally detailed and finely acid etched scene of a very large fish complete with very detailed scales, fins, eye and mouth. The fish is swimming above a variety of plantlife including differing underwater leaves which also grow out of the sandy sea bed. Flying above the wave like design, surrounding the opening of the matchsafe, is a large dragonfly. The scenes are beautifully executed and both have a feeling of movement to them. The acid etching is very raised and feels as though it has been applied, you can feel this clearly when you run your finger over it. The engraved detail is outstanding. The match safe is in EXCELLENT condition and all the detailing is CRISP and SHARP like the day it was made. T is absolutely NO WEAR to the scene whatsoever. The silver has a nice old patina. The guage of metal is very good and it has a nice solid feel in the hand. T are a two very small dings on the lid near the bird and you can see the seam join next to the striker which is very slightly dented. (These are very minor and both could be very easily rectified)T is also some very minor scratching. The flip lid mechanism works and the lid snaps shut tightly. The striker is still sharp but has been well used! (See pics) The match safe is marked with the Gorham hallmark (lion, anchor, date letter) and 'STERLING' on one side and 345 P on the other side. (Both marks are on the inside rim and can be clearly seen when you open the matchsafe). The LARGE match safe measures just under 2 3/4 inches (2 11/16) in length. A really rare Gorham sterling silver match safe c.1880 of outstanding beauty and design in excellent original condition. Please see my other auctions for more interesting American sterling silver including an embossed Native American match safe. I do not send second chance offers so if you get one, it's not from me! If you have less than 10 positive feedbacks could you please email me before bidding, thanks. Thanks for looking and please email any questions.
