A rare large GORHAM sterling silver MATCH SAFE with swimming FISH (different design on each side) Circa 1880 . The decoration has two large well modelled predator like fish jumping through the frothy waves (this is on the front side) and on the reverse side is a large shoal of fish swimming through the wavy depths. All the fish are well modelled and the scene has a feeling of movement as the fish jostle one another as they swim through the rough waters. All three sides have a wave design, the base has a substantial striker. I suspect the designer's idea was a continuous scene of predator fish catching up with their prey (the shoal) and eventually devouring them. The match safe is large in size and measures just under 2 1/2 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide. It is marked with the GORHAM mark, STERLING, 340, p. The condition is good with no damage or repairs, the hinge is tight and works well, the striker is nice and sharp. T are no dings or dents and it has a nice old patina. The shoal of fish and the waves are well chased and engraved with only minimal wear, the two predator fish are also well chased and engraved with slight wear to the one of the fish, but still in good condition. The three sides, with the wave like design, have some wear. Overall the condition of the decoration is good. A lovely and very collectible antique Gorham sterling match safe, which would appeal to collectors of match safes, and fishing enthusiasts.
