DESCRIPTION
This is a large Gorham Silver Co. sterling silver covered serving bowl on pedestal footed base. The piece measures 10 1/2 inches diameter at the widest side rim x 5 1/2 inches H to the top of the finial approximately. The base weighs 19 ounces and the lid 10 1/2 ounces approximately on my postal scale. The piece is in excellent condition with the only things I see to comment are a couple of very tiny dings and normal light wear scratching from usage and polishing. The piece is marked on the base GORHAM [ trademark psuedo hallmarks] STERLIN [G] 9902 and has a retailers stamp of E. KELLER & SONS. The Gorham trademarks are very faint but just visible and the "G" of STERLING is also very light and not readable. PLEASE READ: The lid is unmarked. I purchased the piece with this lid and it fits the piece fairly well but I am unsure if it is original. It looks to be the original but I cannot find a reference to this piece to see its originality. It appears to be sterling (?) but I did not have it tested. I would have thought Gorham would have stamped the lid also but I am unsure. The finial appears to be either ivory or a celluloid/bakelite facsimile of a patinated ivory. I would venture to guess the age of the piece to be circa 1930's due to it not having a date mark when Gorham apparently did not date mark their pieces. I do not know the pattern name of this design. I am not an expert in the area of American silver but I do try to describe my items as accurately as I possibly can but in the end it is up to you as a purchaser to make any final evaluations by asking questions, viewing my description and looking at the offered photos.
