You are bidding on a luna used to display the Host inside a monstrance. The luna chamber is made of sterling silver, and it is marked "sterling" on the bottom of the base. On the base are also markings indicating that the luna was made by the Gorham Company, a well-known maker of fine ecclesiastical metalware and silver and silverplated items. T is a small curved "tongue" at the side of the back half of the luna which snaps over the side rim of the front half, creating a secure closure. The glass on both exterior halves of the luna is beveled. The hinge between the halves is located at the side of the halves. A curved metal bar with a knob at the top comprises the "handle" on the luna, allowing for the luna's placement into and removal from the monstrance. This bar swings down out of the way so the luna can be opened. When the bar is in place over the glass, a loop of metal fits over the knob, further securing the luna closed and making handling of the luna easier. A plate on the base would slide into a similarly sized groove/track in the viewing chamber of a monstrance. The bottom of the plate is marked "GORHAM" beneath which are three cartouches containing images of a lion, an anchor and a capital "G". The word "STERLING" is engraved beneath the cartouches, and the numbers 2394 appear at the bottom. This luna is in excellent condition. read more
