W.H. GOSS CHINA RARE CHILD'S MUG'POOR MINCE PIE' ‘Poor Mince Pie’ has silhouetted figures all in a black frieze around the mug, comprising a youth wearing a cloth cap and holding a spoon above a walking elfin-like figure with a half-eaten mince pie for a head, facing a procession of a turkey, a rabbit, a duck and another elfin-like figure with a plum pudding for a head. It has the designer's monogram for Margaret Goss - comprising the letters M.G. and bearing the date 1922. Size - 65mm (2.6 inches) high Condition: In mint condition - no chips, cracks or restorations. The black edge is in perfect condition. No Reserve ___________________________________________________________________ Margaret ('Peggy') Goss : grand-daughter of William Henry Goss, daughter of William Huntley Goss, produced a number of coloured decorations, usually illustrations of nursery rhymes or animal caricatures, for use on mugs. These were designed for children, and it is, therefore, surprising that even the small number seen still exist. A similar decoration to 'Poor Mince Pie' found undated and without the usual Margaret Goss cipher, is thought to be an earlier design by her father, William Huntley Goss, who used to give the mugs to the children of the family as party presents. ___________________________________________________________________________ read more
