This is 10 inches high including the 1 inch high black stone base. Just reduced the price by 200 USD to 575.00 so I can go on and list other things.Christies currently has this type on sale for 1200 euros plus 30 percent commission.You are bidding on a bronze column of Napoleon, based on Trajans column in Rome. Erected in the early 19th century, see description below. This was one of the prized souvenirs of the Grand Tour, brought back most often to England, where I purchased it. It was probably from the 1880s. It has an alochol thermo meter. I looked up mercury and alcohol thermo meters and both were invented and put into use by Fahrenheit in the late 18th century. It turns out, even though today every one tends to be a snob about wanting mercury, the alcohol thermo meter readings where fasters, but the glass was thinner and broke more easily, while due to the mercury, the glass holders were thicker. I always assumed the red liquid thermo meters were more in the 20th century, but that turns out not to be correct. I also think silver mercury was thought to have a more elegant look. I believe all parts are original. It is mounted on a stone square base that is 3 3/4 inch square. The bronze fence is intact, which is most often missing.
