My mom bought this quilt top at an estate auction in South Dakota about 10 years ago. She washed it. It is entirely hand stitched in the Grandmother's Flower Garden pattern. The fabric is 100% cotton vintage feedsacks using three different patterned feedsacks and plain muslin background. The outstanding feature of this piece is the diamond lattice between each block. This piece could be used in a guest bedroom over a quilt rack or it could be finished quite easily. Dating back to the 1920's - 30's, it is a piece of prairie history. The women used to make their clothing and household items out of the fabric that chicken feed or flour came in. They usually needed several bags of the same fabric to make a garment. Flower centers are bubblegum pink and that is an icon color of that era. The second layer of the flower is a small pink cherry print. The third layer is a similar print in a golden yellow color. Around each flower is a row of cream color muslin hexagons probably from unbleached flour sacks. These are set off by green diamonds. The edges are frayed by 3/16th's of an inch and one block is damaged as pictured in 3rd picture. If someone wanted to repair this, it would be simple to scan an undamaged block and print it on muslin and sew it in place. The damage only involves four small hexagons as seen in pic. Unhemmed size is 86 X 70 inches. The edges are hexagonal - not linear. Sewing is very even with small stitches about 8-10 per inch as seen in picture. Give this fab fabric a new home!
