A WONDERFUL PIECE OF EARLY PENNSYLVANIA PAINTED FOLK ART. A LATE 18th Century HANGING GAME RACK OR HERB RACK WITH A RARE "HORSE HEAD" SCROLLED CREST IN 19TH CENTURY WINDSOR GREEN PAINT OVER THE ORIGINAL RED STAIN. Pennsylvania, Circa 1789-1820 in whitewood, probably poplar . This fine GAME RACK is in very nice condition, IT IS UNTOUCHED and retains its ORIGINAL RED STAINED SURFACE UNDER REMNANTS OF LATER 19TH C WINDSOR GREEN PAINT. A very bold and large size rack being nearly 40" across. The top crest is scrolled and decorated with "TWO HORSE HEADS AND A TRIPLE HALF MOON CENTER". It still retains its original eleven (11) HAND WROUGHT IRON HOOKS with the best pig tail ends. The bottom has a nicely shaped thumb molding. The 19th C windsor green paint is mostly gone on the front and with just a little effort the entire piece could be taken down to the original red. There highly decorative racks were usually attached to the wall near the heart or to the Fireplace Surround itself and was used to hang game, birds, and small animals before they were cooked. It was also used to hang herbs for drying near the fireplace. No major damages except for the wear and tear you would expect from an item like this over the course of nearly 200 years. For similar examples see, "Early American Antique Country Furnishings", by George Neumann.
