This is one of the BEST Mid 19th Century Civil War Period Northern States INLAID Document or Valuable Boxes. Mahogany and Walnut and Satinwood Inlay, circa 1860-1870 in the ORIGINAL surface with the MOST INCREDIBLE INLAID DECORATION. This type of box was made to display on a chest or table and was used to hold valuable papers or possessions. This fine box has a nice applied top molding and still retains its original brass hinges. The inlaid decoration is the BEST!!. Highly patterned designs on the front and both sides. The front is decorated with a nice inlaid FLAG and turnscrews. The bottom portion is contrasting inlaid strips. The side have great inlaid "carrying handles". The case has great formed and delicate dovetails. The interior is clean. The bottom board is native northern pine. The condition is very nice, t are no repairs or restoration at all, just the typical wear and tear you would see from 160 years of use. Theses types of boxes were made to sit directly on top of the chest or table. Many of these have over the years "acquired" a newer base,or have been refinished but this one is all original. The size is wonderful, it is 10" across the front, it is 8" deep and it stands just 4 1/2" high . A truly great find especially in such fine condition and surface, usually these are in poor shape and have been stripped of all their paint and patina.
