LOS CASTILLO, Azur-Malachite, Mother-of Pearl and Brass Geometrical Belt Buckle. Fully Marked, ca. 1970’s. LOS CASTILLO, the young Castillo brothers began their apprenticeship in the first workshop, which was set up in Spratling’s home in Taxco . The Castillos were not part of Las Delicias continuously from 1931 to 1939, the year they left to form their own company. The original shop and taller were established on the Plazuela Bernal, which continues to be the main showroom for Los Castillo today. You could find more information about them in the book: Mexican Silver, 20 th Century Handwrought Jewelry & Metalwork by Penny Chittim Morrill and Carole A. Berk. This beautiful belt buckle was all hand crafted. It is known that Los Castillo follow procedures developed by Pre-Conquest artisans to produce stone inlay pieces. The basic form consists of a metal base with raised contours which distinguish the outlines of the image. In the indentations, a cement pitch is spread which holds the stone after it has been cut to fit the space. This work requires expert craftsmen because the stones are thin and brittle and are often applied in a small area. This beautiful belt buckle was made with this technique and it is composed of five geometrical figures. The figures are made of azur-malachite and two small rectangles are of mother-of-pearl,
