This is a painting of a 1924 Delage race car in action by James Lee Clutter. It was painted sometime between the mid 1960’s and the mid 1970’s Clutter had his own studio in the mid 1960’s through mid1970’s in Newport Beach, California. Clutter was born in 1922 in Kansas City, Missouri. In the 1950’s and 1960’s he studied with Sergei Bongart, who was a student of Nicoli Fechin. Clutter’s best sellers during the 1970’s were paintings depicting race cars, bull fighting and westerns. In 1977 Clutter changed his last name to Colt. Almost all of his paintings displayed both movement and drama. He often worked in watercolor gouache. He was a member of the Society of Illustrators, the Pastel Society of America, and American Artists Professional League, all in New York. He exhibited at the National Art Club of New York and in the American Watercolor Society shows at the National Academy galleries in New York. He also exhibited and won prizes in Southern California. This painting measures 10 3/8ths by 13 3/8ths inches by sight, with the matte it measures 16 by 20 inches. It is painted in watercolors and gouache. It is signed James Clutter in the bottom right corner and has his stamp on the back. There is small tare the bottom right corner of the matte. It has a plastic cover over the front and taped to the back. It is unframed. Questions? read more
