Great Political Letter From Bellows Falls, VT Dated 1848 September 18, 1848, Manuscript Letter From One Newspaper Editor to Another, Mentioning Issues Such as Abolition, Democrats, the Mexican War and General Taylor, Choice Very Fine. In this 4 page letter, John W Moore, publisher of the Bellows Falls (VT) Gazette, has written to David Robinson Jr, editor of the Vermont Gazette at Bennington, with some great political banter. Among the topics mentioned are General Zachary Taylor, about whom he writes: ".... In regard to Gen. Taylor, if you will look back to my paper as early as the Battle of Monterey, you will see that I then said he would be the next President, and I have thought so ever since ... I like the character of Gen. Taylor, and I approve of the course he has taken in coming before the people, as the people's candidate. I wish all candidates of all parties were as honest ... as I believe him to be." Also under his gaze is the Democratic Party, on which he writes: "... the democratic party ... proves to have the most deserters. The would-be Great Men in the democratic ranks, like some of the would-be leaders in the Whig Party, are willing to go over to the Abolition Party in a body with the false hope of becoming t what they have failed to become in the ranks which they have left -- dictators and managers!" He concludes with a statement on politicians in general: "Honesty in political matters, I have done looking for or expecting ..." This 10" x 8" letter, clearly written on blue paper, is signed "John W Moore." This letter is in excellent condition, with no apparent holes or tears. A fascinating look at mid 1800's politics.
