T is neither a painting in the mind Nor a mind in the painting: And yet, w else can one find a painting Than in the mind? Avatamsaka Sutra PRICE REDUCED FOR THE HOLIDAYS!!! This thangka is of Sakyamuni (Shakyamuni) Buddha and has one of the previous Buddhas, possibly Dippankara, in the upper left and the future Buddha, Maitreya, in the upper right. Below him are two disciples. Measures about 18 inches by 25 & 1/2 inches without the borders. I am making little or nothing on this painting. It has gotten very hard for the few Tibetan traditional thangka painters left in Nepal to make a living and compete with the Newari and Tamang painters who are wonderful artists but often don't follow the traditional methods. I think it is important to support them. I had the privilege of living with a Tibetan family in Kathmandu for almost 3 months that contained a 6th generation and 7th generation thangka painter. This one was begun by the man I called "Po-po-la" for 3 months, whose real Tibetan name is Thargyal. Before beginning any thangka, he reads the corresponding scriptures about the deities to be portrayed. Then he draws the figures in pencil according to strict geometic proportions written many hundreds of years ago.
