1937 NEWSPAPER REPORTING THE HINDENBURG DISASTER ! NOT AS REPRINT ! Complete 40 page issue with the 1st report of the famous Hindenburg zeppelin disasterTHE SPRINGFIELD UNION, Massachusetts, May 7, 1937 This air disaster would become one of the landmark disaster events of the 20th century, much due to the dramatic newsreel coverage and reporting which documented the event from before it happened until it was smoldering on the ground. The front page has a great two line banner headline which stands out for display: "AIR LINER HINDENBURG EXPLODES; AT LEAST THIRD OF 99 ABOARD DIE" with subheads: "Zeppelin Falls, Burns At Lakehurst While Preparing to Land" and more (see photos). Also a nice photo of the famous zeppelin approaching the airfield in New Jersey with caption: * The Hindenburg at Lakehurst, Scene of Disaster Other related headlines involving the disaster on the front page as well. One can only imagine what the owner of this actual newspaper thought when reading this article with large, bold headlines on the air disaster at Lakehurst New Jersey. Well before the advent of television, this newspaper report would be their first view of the disaster which they likely heard of on the radio the day before. Great to have this report with such a nice bold headline accompanied with a dramatic photo! Other news of the day throughout. Little browning and wear at the margins, otherwise in good condition. Wikipedia notes: At 7:25 p.m. local time, the Hindenburg caught fire and quickly became engulfed in flames. The flames quickly spread forward. Almost instantly, a water tank and a fuel tank burst out of the hull. At the same time, a crack appeared behind the passenger decks. The incident is widely remembered as one of the most dramatic accidents of modern time. The cause of the accident has never been determined, although many theories, some highly controversial, have been proposed. How has such an issue survived through the years? This issue was kept by a library in a bound volume since the 1930's along with other issues of the same year, used by patrons and safely stored. Eventually this issue was likely microfilmed by the library then made available to the general collecting public.
